To provide area teenagers a safe and stimulating environment for connecting, having fun, and finding acceptance among peers and adults in the community.
Brenda has lived in the McHenry County community since 1992. She has spent that time raising her family and staying actively involved in projects that empower our youth. The BREAK is a special project that she and a group of sophomores from Crystal Lake South High School began in January 2013. Watching the community and the youth evolve into a partnership of empowerment has been a highlight of her work in the community. She holds her B.A. in Biology with a minor in Psychology from Drake University. She is co-owner of Fast Finish Coaching, loves running, reading and spending time with her family.
Holly has been with The Break since October 2015 and is the Youth Technology Librarian at the Algonquin Area Public Library District. She has a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from UIUC, a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from UIC, and is a member of Leadership Greater McHenry County Class of 2018. She lives in Cary now but grew up in Crystal Lake and graduated from South High School in 2009. Interests include supporting local music, yoga, exploring the outdoors, and excessive amounts of reading.
Patti lived in Crystal Lake from 1993-1998 and returned with her family in 2008. She has dedicated much of her time to raising her two boys while still being active in the community. She has been involved with the Break since its conception. With a Degree in Public Relations and special training in Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault crisis and prevention work, she brings a variety of skills to the organization. She is working toward her goals to bring more awareness, prevention and education programs to youth and adults in McHenry County. Patti’s interests include running, party planning and creating all natural skin care products and remedies using essential oils.
Having grown up in the Crystal Lake area, Jessica was excited to find out about the Break and the opportunities it provides for teenagers in the area. Jessica attended Hope College in Holland, MI, where she received a degree in social work and Spanish. After graduation, she returned to the Crystal Lake area to start her family. She is a certified domestic violence professional and currently works as a prevention specialist for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs in the community. She is passionate about working with youth. If she isn't at work, you can probably find her playing with her dog, Frankie.
Having been a resident of Crystal Lake for over 24 years, Kristine has been involved in the community while raising her family. Kristine has a particular passion for the youth of our community and has been a Girl Scout leader and instructed children in religious studies. Kristine joined the Crystal Lake Teen Center Board in 2014 and maintains a position as the Board Secretary. It has been it has been a pleasure to see the growing community support for The Break. She is currently employed with a mortgage financial institution with a Finance Degree.
Sue has been in finance roles for over 27 years and most of her experience is in the broadcasting, advertising, and public relations industry. She is currently the SVP, Finance Director for Ogilvy, a global advertising agency where she is a client finance lead on large clients. She is also the lead for the PR capability across the U.S. She has lived in Crystal Lake for 13 years with her husband, Kerry and their two boys, Brody and Dylan. Her personal focus has been on the mind-body connection and living consciously. She is a Heart Math certified trainer and enjoys helping others transform.
Michelle lives in Crystal Lake with her husband and two teenagers. Soon after moving to the area in 2018, Michelle was looking for activities for her youngest child and was so grateful to find the BREAK that she wanted to help support the mission in whatever way she could. Michelle has a degree in Journalism, but spent most of her career in corporate training and development management. Even after staying at home to raise a family, Michelle has been actively involved in every community she has lived, and currently serves as president of a nonprofit supporting local mothers.
Jim Schwertfeger, Captain of the Guard, has been an integral part of The Break for over 4 years. Jim started as a volunteer and stepped in as interim manager after the previous manager took another job. His service at the BREAK has proven to be invaluable and the BREAK Board asked him to commit to a permanent position as manager/program coordinator. He works closely with Brenda Napholz, BREAK Board President, and has helped develop programs and processes over the past 4 years. Prior to working at the BREAK, he has worked for various companies and schools such as Consumer Education Systems, Machinima, Malia Designs, Element Animation, and Harper College.
